Community of methods experts and practitioners

The Methods Knowledge Exchange Network (mKEN) is a European community of methods experts and practitioners working to improve biodiversity decision-making.

Members contribute their expertise to the Methods4Nature project by informing, testing, and refining methodological guidance for biodiversity science-policy requests.

Beyond the project, the mKEN is intended to become a lasting Community of Practice within the Science Service for Biodiversity (SSBD).

From policy need to scientific advice

To improve biodiversity decision-making, we need connected knowledge. mKEN is a key part of this network. It ensures that the science behind policy advice is trustworthy, open, and driven by the decision-makers’ needs.

The European Commission’s in-house science service. It hosts the secretariat of the KCBD.

JRC (Joint Research Centre)

A joint EC/EEA body set up in 2020 to channel scientific evidence into the implementation of the EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030. It receives and coordinates policy requests on biodiversity.

KCBD (Knowledge Centre for Biodiversity)

The Horizon Europe project (22 partners, 13 countries) building the operational response to those requests: a live, functioning Science Service.

BioAgora

The service platform BioAgora is currently building. It will act as the scientific pillar of the KCBD, turning research into usable advice for policymakers.

SSBD (Science Service for Biodiversity)

A BioAgora-funded project (Jan 2026-Jan 2027) developing the methodological backbone of the SSBD: a framework, guidance, and an AI-supported tool for choosing the right method or method-bundle for a given request.

Methods4Nature (M4Nature)

The community of methods experts and practitioners. One of the several thematic ‘KENs’ feeding into the wider BioAgora network.
